Oh Honey Honey - 6 DIY honey hair masks to try

Honey; the sticky sweet substance that bees create has been used for centuries to enhance health and beauty. In TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine) honey is categorized as neutral and associated with the spleen, large intestine and stomach meridians (energy channels). It's used to treat dampness in the body to balance qi, as well as soothing coughs and sore throats. It's been shown that honey, especially Manuka honey from New Zealand contains anti bacterial properties. There haven't been enough scientific studies into all the numerous benefits of this sweet nectar even though you can find hair products that contain honey or honey extract easily at your local drugstore, but why not try a few of the DIY recipes below and judge for yourself?

Why is honey good for your hair?

1. Honey is an emollient which means it keeps moisture within your hair, helping it to stay shiny and soft.

2. Is antibacterial which may kill off any bacteria within the scalp, leading to soothing of scalp issues such as dandruff, eczema, dry and itchy spots.

3. There is anecdotal evidence that honey can encourage hair growth by stunting the growth of bacteria and microbes that can lead to one type of hair loss.

In these recipes it's best to use organic ingredients. Double quantities if you have long or thick hair. Apply once a week.


Honey & egg mask:

1/2 cup of honey and 1 egg, 3 drops of Supernatural Oil

Whisk all together, spread and massage evenly through hair and scalp. Cover hair in a shower cap or towel. Leave for 20 - 30 mins and wash out with your regular shampoo & conditioner.


Honey, coconut oil & olive oil mask:

1/2 cup of honey, 1/2 cup olive oil, 1/4 cup melted coconut oil, 3 drops of Supernatural Oil

Melt the coconut oil on low in a microwave, mix with honey & olive oil. Massage and spread through hair & scalp, cover hair in shower cap or towel, leave for 40 mins. Wash out with shampoo & conditioner.


Honey & apple cider vinegar mask:

1 tbsp ACV, 3 tbsp water, 1/4 cup honey,4 drops of Supernatural Oil

Mix ingredients will, massage into scalp and hair. Leave for 20 mins. Wash with shampoo & conditioner.


Honey, yogurt & avocado mask:

1/2 cup natural yogurt, 1/2 mashed avocado, 1/3 cup honey, 4 drops of Supernatural Oil

Mix well, massage into scalp & hair, cover with shower cap or towel, leave in for 20 - 30 mins. Wash with shampoo.

The yogurt contains lactic acid that can act as a mild antibacterial agent to kill bacteria that can cause dandruff.


Honey & aloe vera mask, 3 drops of Supernatural Oil:

3 tbsp aloe vera gel, 3 tsbp honey

Mix the ingredients well and massage onto the scalp. Wash with a gentle shampoo & conditioner.


Honey & coconut oil mask, 6 drops of Supernatural Oil:

1/2 cup honey, 1/2 cup melted coconut oil

Mix well, massage well into hair and scalp. Cover hair with shower cap or towel and leave for 30 - 40 mins. Wash with shampoo & conditioner.
